Outside flood water carries soil, debris, sewage and chemicals, so restoration crews treat it as contaminated. Carpet, pad, insulation and the lower part of drywall that it touched are normally removed, not dried in place. Hard surfaces are cleaned and the structure is dried before anything is rebuilt.
Flood risk in Texas
Central Texas between Austin and San Antonio is known as Flash Flood Alley. Thin soil over limestone and steep Hill Country terrain send rain into creeks and rivers very quickly. Houston and the coastal counties flood from tropical systems and slow-moving storms that drop heavy rain over flat ground and bayous. North Texas cities get intense spring storm lines that overwhelm streets and drainage.
Before the crew arrives
- 1Don't walk through flood water if power may be on in that area.
- 2Don't drive or walk through moving water outside. Turn around.
- 3Photograph water lines on walls, furniture and appliances.
- 4Check whether you have a separate flood insurance policy. Standard homeowners policies usually exclude outside flood water.
If water came up through floor drains or toilets, see sewage backup cleanup. For drying and water removal details, see water extraction.
