In warm, humid conditions, which describes much of Texas for much of the year, mold can start on damp drywall, wood and carpet within a day or two. Common places are behind baseboards after a leak, under sinks, in attics where AC condensate or roof leaks dripped, and in bathrooms without good ventilation.
What remediation involves
- 1Finding and fixing the moisture source.
- 2Containing the area so spores don't spread through the house or the HVAC system.
- 3Removing moldy porous materials such as drywall, insulation and carpet.
- 4Cleaning hard surfaces and drying the area.
- 5Rebuilding once the area is dry.
Testing
Visible mold usually doesn't need a test to confirm it's there. Testing can help when there's a musty smell with no visible growth, or after remediation to confirm the area is clean. Texas has its own rules for mold assessment and remediation work. Ask the company you're connected with how they handle assessment.
Mold usually follows water that wasn't dried in time. See water extraction and water damage restoration.
