Sewage backups come up through the lowest drains in the house: floor drains, showers, tubs and toilets. Causes include a blocked or collapsed sewer line, tree roots, grease buildup, or a city main that backs up during heavy rain.
Why sewage is handled differently
Restoration crews treat sewage as black water. Porous materials it touched (carpet, pad, the bottom of drywall, insulation and often particleboard cabinet bases) are removed. Hard surfaces are cleaned and disinfected, then the area is dried. Crews wear protective gear for a reason.
What to do
- 1Stop using water in the house so you don't add more to the backup.
- 2Keep children and pets out of the area.
- 3Don't use a household vacuum or fans that spread the contamination.
- 4Call a plumber about the blockage and a restoration company about the cleanup.
If outside water also came in, see flood damage restoration. If materials stayed wet for days, read about mold remediation.
